# Focus Areas

> Give your learning a direction without designing a curriculum.

A Focus Area names something you want to get better at. It gives the Bettership agents a reason to connect resources, questions, and practice around you.

“Lead a stronger team” is a Focus Area. So is “Give difficult feedback well.” You can start broad or name a specific capability.

## The learning direction and the reason behind it

The project or outcome that matters to you supplies context. The Focus Area names the capability you want to develop.

For example:

* **What you're trying to make possible:** Lead the next product launch.
* **What you want to get better at:** Align people around a product decision.
* **Why now:** Your recommendations aren't getting the discussion they need.

The reason helps the agents judge what is relevant. It doesn't turn Bettership into the project plan for your launch.

## Begin before the definition is perfect

You don't need a list of subskills, a mastery score, or a syllabus. Start with the direction and why it matters. Steward can help you make the definition clearer, and you can change it as you learn.

A useful definition gives the agents more than a topic. “Negotiation” names a subject. “Stay clear about my priorities when a client pushes back on scope” names something you want to become able to do.

## How many should you have?

Start with one that matters now. Add another when it represents a different direction you want to work on. You don't need a Focus Area for every resource or interest.

You can ask a question, practice, or use a resource without first creating a Focus Area. It supplies continuing direction when that is useful, rather than permission to begin.
